This weekend I headed to the arguably hippest spot in the Midwest, Uptown in Minneapolis. After a good deal of walking through the weekend Art Festival, it was time to refresh myself at a classic staple within the Twin Cities scene, Spyhouse Coffee Roasters.
The Spyhouse first opened its doors in 2008 and has been serving the local hipsters, and trendy young professionals ever since. Set up in a 1907 brownstone the aesthetic of this coffee shop plays on vintage Americana with framed art and little touches that bring to mind the American dream in a location where you can’t help, but wonder at the metaphor.
The warm atmosphere of the Spyhouse is immediate, with a small minimalistic menu and selection of savory and sweet snacks, you get a feeling of simplicity when you walk through the doors. The Spyhouse seems to say, don’t worry so much, have a cup of coffee, a bite to eat, and breathe for a minute.
With such gorgeous pastries it is hard to say no… so don’t!
While the coffee selection at the Spyhouse may be their namesake, there are also a few other stars that are worth mentioning. Specialty drinks, such as a lavender infused latte, seasonal drinks, and my favorite the jasmine lemonade, offer unique flavorings to traditional coffee shop staples.
While the Uptown funk of the Spyhouse may be too much for traditional big box store coffee drinkers, I would encourage all my coffee connoisseurs out there to make a pit stop at one of the Spyhouse’s four Twin City Locations on your next visit for a strong cup of joe!
